YOUR KNEE

Your knee includes a large number of important parts. The femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone), and patella (knee cap) are held together by a number of important ligaments, which help keep your knee stable while allowing it to move and perform. Your body weight is transmitted through the knee bones to the articular cartilage (sliding surfaces) of the knee joint, which is cushioned and protected by special shock absorbing cartilages called menisci. Any of these structures can be damaged by injury or degeneration, resulting in pain, stiffness, catching or giving way of the knee.

Dr. Botma offers comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation programmes for many knee injuries and degenerative conditions. Often surgery is not required, but if it is, it can frequently be performed with arthroscopic or minimally invasive techniques.

KNEE ANATOMY

The knee joint is made up of four bones; the femur (thigh bone), the tibia (shin bone), the patella (knee cap) and the fibula. The knee is held together by special thick structures called ligaments (e.g. the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)), in addition to the joint capsule and the strong muscles of the thigh and calf. The ends of the femur and tibia, and the undersurface of the patella, are covered with a smooth, gliding surface called articular cartilage (joint surface). The articular cartilage is protected by two rubbery shock-absorbing structures called the medial meniscus and lateral meniscus.
